Bands

Sound has three bands, each with its own rules.

  • Infrasound, 1–19 Hz: in air only to the next block; it travels along Vibrating Rods (1% lost a block).
  • Audible, C3–B5: notes, chords, interference; everything so far.
  • Ultrasound, 20–100 kHz: dies within a few blocks of air, solids stop it; it travels in Waveguides.

A Geophone listens to infrasound, an Ultrasound Receiver to ultrasound: they only measure (comparator; a Wave Detector reads them). On a line they read its tone and power by themselves; they take nothing.

On the fork’s tuning wheel the mouse wheel switches band. Out of the audible band the fork does not ring: it is only a reference.

A Waveguide carries ultrasound from a source touching it to the machines touching the same run, losing 2% per block (see Lines and Valves). Infrasound comes from a Mixer or a Water Turbine, ultrasound from a Harmonic Multiplier (see Conversion).

A Vibrating Rod does for infrasound what a waveguide does for ultrasound: a source touching a run (a water turbine at the end of its axle, a mixer, an octave converter’s front) feeds every infrasound machine touching the same run, whatever the distance; rods connect to each other and to those machines. Rods carrying power tremble, harder the more power runs.
